First IACS Computational Challenge wraps up

A simulated annealing approach turns out to be the optimal solution to opening paths for saving lives after a major hurricane

Congratulations to the two teams that competed in the first IACS Computational Challenge! Team B (coached by Challenge creator and IACS Lecturer Pavlos Protopapas) came up with the winning solution, but Team A (coached by Applied Math Lecturer Mauricio Santillana) was a close second.

The story of the Challenge, created with the help of Visiting Associate Professor Ozlem Ergun and her students at Georgia Tech, is told by Caroline Perry of the SEAS Communications staff here. Chris Beaumont of Team B reflected on the experience in his blog.
